On behalf of the Board of Education, Administration, Staff and Community of Harrisburg I would like to personally thank Pastor David Smith, Randy and Belinda Funkhouser(pictured) and the entire congregation of First Baptist Church in Grayville for their generous donation of masks and sanitation supplies for our district. Their generosity and giving nature is much appreciated. We want to reach out with a big BULLDOG THANK YOU!
Now in my best Paul Harvey voice....... I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU "THE REST OF THE STORY"
Many people may find it a bit curious as to why a community as small as Grayville reaches out to a town of Harrisburg approximately an hour away. You would only find it curious if you do not know the people of Grayville. This small oil community on the Wabash river has always been about others. One instance stands out in my mind specifically. Approximately 30 years ago, a member of First Baptist Church, Mrs. Loma Talley, the late wife of Leon Talley was a Principal at Wells Elementary there in Grayville. She took a chance on a recent graduate, with a LESS than stellar transcript and/or resume. Nevertheless, she recommended that person for the job.
She then began mentoring and encouraging this teacher to reach their maximum potential. Mrs. Talley and the entire community wrapped their arms around this teacher and supported everything the school attempted to do for the betterment of children. With her encouragement and guidance this teacher had a wildly successful decade as an instructor at Grayville. She encouraged the teacher to consider leadership training and becoming an administrator. Mrs Talley knew that meant the end to this teacher's relationship with Grayville, but it was time. That person moved on from Grayville shortly after that time. That was the last time they ever saw Loma Talley or spent any time in Grayville, but they think of that place and that special woman often.
Fast forward this story to yesterday, when I pulled into the parking area of the First Baptist Church of Grayville I was overcome with that same feeling of a little community and Loma Talley wrapping their arms around someone to help people in need. That is the same feeling I felt appoximately 30 years ago, when MIKE GAUCH was the person that Loma Talley and the little community of Grayville took a chance and made him a part of their community. Yes, Grayville is where I started my career and how ironic as I close in on the end of my career they reach out to our community and provide us with assistance.
I was able to spend a few minutes yesterday talking about the old days with Randy and Belinda Funkhouser (I had their daughters in class, and one of their daughters married one of the kids I coached), Jim Buckman, Terry Haywood etc. We had many laughs and discussions of the last 30 years....... Bulldog Nation.....I tell you that story only to let you know that there are still people in this world that simply CARE and want to help. I know we are that way in Harrisburg as well, so if you are ever on route 1 and go through Grayville stop in and get a bite to eat or fill your tank up with gas.....Pay it forward!!!!! Pastor David Smith you have a wonderful church and serve a wonderful community! Thank you and that is the "REST OF THE STORY".
Superintendent
Mike Gauch
